    Nepal-Tibet floods kill 919, leave 4,793 missing

KATHMANDU, NEPAL / RankWire.AI / – Flooding across Nepal and Tibet has killed at least 919 people, while 4,793 remain missing after the August 26 disaster. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said the country’s toll reached 903 dead and 4,247 missing on Monday. Tibetan officials reported 16 deaths and 546 missing in Gyirong County. The combined figures rose sharply from weekend counts as search teams reached more flood-hit areas and updated missing-person records.

The Nepal authority said rescue teams have brought 10,451 people to safety, including 252 foreign nationals. It listed 592 foreigners among those still missing, alongside 933 workers from hydropower projects along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli corridors. Officials recorded 267 injured people, while 156 had left medical care after treatment. Nepal has deployed more than 20,000 security personnel for search, rescue and relief work across affected districts. Helicopters are also moving survivors and emergency supplies between isolated communities.

The flood struck the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa District on the morning of August 26. It swept through riverbank settlements and damaged homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure. Officials said Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha suffered major effects as floodwaters moved through connected river systems. The disaster also hit Gyirong County in Tibet, where rescue teams continue searching mountain valleys and border areas. Authorities are still examining the full sequence that triggered the flood.

Rescue teams focus on missing workers and isolated areas

Search teams are concentrating on hydropower sites where large numbers of workers remain unaccounted for. Nepal Army personnel are coordinating with tunnel rescue specialists from India, China and South Korea at several locations. Officials say at least 90 people remain trapped in multiple hydropower tunnels blocked by mud, rock and debris. Rescuers have used drilling, ventilation and heavy equipment while teams work through unstable ground and damaged access routes. Authorities continue checking worker lists as project operators and families report missing staff.

Recovery teams are also handling large numbers of unidentified bodies carried downstream by the flood. Twenty-one hospitals are holding unidentified remains while officials compare records and seek information from relatives. In Chitwan, authorities collected DNA samples and identifying details before temporary burials of some bodies. The disaster authority said the recovery count can change as teams identify bodies and reconcile duplicate or incomplete reports. Search crews are also checking isolated communities where damaged roads and bridges have slowed access.

Foreign nationals remain among thousands unaccounted for

Foreign nationals remain a significant part of the missing-person lists on both sides of the border. Nepal lists 592 foreigners as missing, while Tibetan authorities count 261 foreign nationals among 546 people unaccounted for there. The Tibetan list includes citizens of Nepal, India, Latvia, the United States and Britain, among other countries. Officials in Kathmandu and Tibet are coordinating identity checks and information on citizens who crossed the border before the flood. Consular teams are also helping families verify names and locations.

Nepal’s government says search, rescue, relief and recovery remain the immediate priorities in the disaster zone. Authorities continue monitoring rivers and downstream flood risks while crews deliver food, medical support and other emergency supplies. The flood has displaced residents and severely damaged transport and power infrastructure across affected areas. Officials have urged the public to rely on verified casualty and missing-person figures as agencies reconcile field reports. As of Monday’s latest confirmed counts, Nepal and Tibet together recorded 919 deaths and 4,793 people missing.
