KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached 8,376 confirmed cases and 4,042 deaths. National health authorities reported the updated total on October 5 as transmission continued across several parts of the country. The epidemic now stands as the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cases have spread across seven provinces since the emergency began in May.

DR Congo Ebola toll rises above 4,000 deaths
Regional health agencies strengthen Ebola surveillance as cases rise across DR Congo.

The outbreak involves Bundibugyo virus disease, one of the known forms of Ebola. Congolese authorities declared the epidemic on May 15 after health officials detected infections in the northeast. By late September, the virus had reached 63 health zones across the country. Ituri has remained one of the main centers of transmission, while North Kivu and other provinces have also reported cases. The outbreak marks the country’s 17th recorded Ebola epidemic since 1976.

Rising case numbers have also increased concern about transmission beyond the country’s borders. Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya has highlighted the risk facing neighboring states. Uganda previously recorded cases linked to the Congolese outbreak before declaring its outbreak over in August. Regional health teams continue to watch cross-border travel routes and communities with frequent population movement. Authorities have also strengthened screening and disease surveillance in areas connected to affected provinces.

    Cross-border surveillance remains a priority

The World Health Organization rates the risk inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high. It also considers the risk high for countries that share land borders with the country. Population movement and informal border crossings remain important factors in the regional response. Health officials have called for stronger laboratory capacity, faster case detection and closer coordination between neighboring states. The organization has not recommended broad travel or trade restrictions in response to the outbreak.

Congolese health teams continue contact tracing, testing, patient care and community outreach across affected health zones. Response workers also focus on infection control and protection for medical staff treating Ebola patients. Security problems have made health operations more difficult in parts of eastern Congo. Some affected communities also face limited access to medical services and laboratory testing. Public health teams continue to identify new infections and trace people who may have come into contact with confirmed cases.

    International assistance supports Ebola response

France has provided 13.4 million euros for Ebola-related work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between January and July 2026. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri on October 3 during a trip focused partly on the health emergency. He toured an Ebola treatment center and met officials involved in the response. The funding has supported humanitarian programs, medical research and health services connected to efforts against the outbreak.

There is currently no specifically approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola. Health workers therefore rely heavily on rapid diagnosis, isolation, contact tracing and supportive medical care. Researchers and public health agencies continue to assess available medical tools for use against the strain. The latest case count has pushed the epidemic beyond the scale of earlier Ebola outbreaks recorded in the country. Authorities continue to release updated figures as laboratories confirm additional infections and response teams track transmission.
